Youth Art Month
The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month at the national level. Festivities take place annually, each March, to celebrate visual arts for grades K-12. The Youth Art Month Program emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.

Youth Art Month Flag Competition
This year’s flag competition theme is My Community, My Story. Flags will be exhibited during the Art Educators of MN Conference, judged on site, and winners announced and awarded by conference end. Each first place prize winning flag will be scanned and printed into a 3’x5’ flag. The winning Elementary School flag will represent Minnesota at the NAEA Convention in New York, March 2027.

NEW Guidelines for 2027
Design a flag or banner based on the theme My Community, My Story. Include Minnesota and Youth Art Month (YAM) if possible in the design. This year we are requesting flag art to be 6 x 10 artworks. By moving away from the entry form template, students will be able to create more freely. Note that the winning flags will be scanned at high resolution for flag production. Artwork needs to be 2D and clear with contrast for the best possible scan.
Size: 6 inches by 10 inches. Vertical or Horizontal.
Eligibility: Open to K-12 students with a current AEM member teacher. Each AEM
member may submit up to 3 designs.
Categories: Elementary (K-5), Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12)
Important: Each flag entry must be accompanied with a fully completed Flag Entry and Artwork Release Form.
Submitting: Mailed entries must be delivered to Joy Blewett, Art Teacher, Bonner Elementary, 526 5th Avenue SE, Stewartville MN 55976 by Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
