The arts are essential. They teach students innumerable lessons—practice makes perfect, small differences can have large effects, collaboration leads to creativity. The arts also teach children that there a several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution.
Research has also shown impressive benefits of arts education on entire school culture—especially student motivation, attitudes, and attendance. Numerous reports discuss the ways that increased access and involvement in arts education encourage students to stay in school, succeed in school, succeed in life, and succeed in work.

By Sunil IyengarA new report from the National Endowment for the Arts re-affirms what we have learned from many other previous studies—namely, that arts education is closely linked with positive academic outcomes and social and emotional development.
The report appears in the wake of new data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), based on survey questions that researchers from the Arts Endowment and NCES co-designed last year. That survey provides estimates of how much arts education is currently being offered by public schools nationwide.
Taken together, the two resources speak volumes about the varying degrees of access to arts learning opportunities that America’s children enjoy, and the measurable benefits.

In most Minnesota high schools, the Activities Director (AD) supports both athletics and extracurricular arts programming. And, directors, coaches, and students in the arts thrive on their—your—support!
In May 2026, Perpich Center for Arts Education surveyed Minnesota high school directors and coaches in theater, visual arts, music, and dance team to find out what Activities Directors are doing that is most helpful to them, and also what else they wish their AD knew. The survey was open for two weeks and 132 responses were received.
